Als Johannes Brahms 1861 seinem ungarischen Freund Joseph Joachim die Partitur seines g-Moll-Klavierquartetts mit dem Rondo alla Zingarese übersandte, gestand der Magyar dem Hanseaten neidlos zu, er habe ihm auf seinem eigenen Territorium “eine ganz tüchtige Schlappe versetzt”. Vor diesem Highlight der Kammermusik tritt das Violoncello als Soloinstrument bei Bach und als Duo-Partner mit Klavier bei Mendelssohn in Erscheinung. Schumann schrieb über die Sonate von Mendelssohn: “Die Sonate ist … reinste, durch sich selbst gültigste Musik , eine Sonate, wie sie irgend je aus großen Künstlerhänden hervorgegangen, .... Ueber Form und Styl noch mehr zu sagen, schenke man der Zeitschrift; man findet Alles in der Sonate besser und nachdrücklicher” Hans Zentgraf widmet sich nach Ausbildung in Frankfurt, New York (Juillard School), Orchestertätigkeit (Hannover, Nürnberg – Solocellist der Oper) dem Unterrichten und der Kammermusik. Sein Klavierpartner Christoph Ullrich, ausgebildet bei Leonard Hokanson, Claude Frank und Rudolf Buchbinder, konzertiert als Solist und Kammermusiker international. Bei Brahms treten Christian Euler, Viola, und Elizabeth Euler, Violine, hinzu.
