J. S. Bach schrieb unmittelbar nach seiner Anstellung als Leipziger Thomaskantor für die Karwoche des Jahres 1724 die Johannes-Passion. Vermutlich komponierte er fünf Passionen, von denen zwei überliefert sind. Die beiden Hauptchöre "Herr, unser Herrscher" und "Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine" bilden Anfang und Höhepunkt eines großangelegten orchestral-vokalen Rahmens, in dem Bach seine höchste polyphone Meisterschaft offenbart. Bachs Musik bleibt bis heute lebendig und frisch. Seine reiche barocke Tonsprache fesselt jeden Zuhörer in dieser so einzigartigen musikalischen Passionsgeschichte.
