Schillers frühes Drama „Die Räuber“ schildert die tödliche Auseinandersetzung mit der väterlichen Ordnung, die ihnen Obdach und Liebe versagt und keine Zukunft mehr bieten kann. Karl ist eigentlich Everybody’s Darling, dem die Welt zu eng und bieder geworden ist. Teils aufgrund eigener Überschätzung und idealistischem Radikalismus, teils durch die Intrige des Bruders ist er verstoßen aus der Sphäre des Vaters und der Gesellschaft. Jetzt will er Vergeltung. Der Kraftmensch Karl schwingt sich zum Hauptmann einer Räuberbande auf, die gewaltsam und brutal die Gesetze bricht. Idealistischer Widerstandsgeist schlägt in Anarchie um, Empörung gegen das System in erbarmungslose Gewalt. Franz ist niemandes Liebling. Fehlende Vaterliebe und die Ungerechtigkeiten der Natur lassen den Zweitgeborenen zum rationellen Materialisten und Intriganten werden, der sich seinen (selbstgeschaffenen) Platz in der Welt erzwingen will. Machtmenschen sind sie beide.
