SESSION 1
In this session you’ll get to know your tutor and classmates and get straight into coding. You’ll install common web development tools and use them to create your very first website. By the end of the session you’ll be able to create a short profile of yourself with text, colours and images. You’ll also learn how to upload your website to a server via FTP.
SESSION 2
In this session you'll learn how to use cascading style sheets (CSS) to control the layout and design of web pages. We'll cover positioning elements on the page, web fonts, colours, gradients and more, and then put it all together to create a responsive portfolio page.
SESSION 3
In this session we take a break from coding and look at the design workflow for front end development. We’ll cover approaches to designing for the responsive web, web typography, accessibility, and user interface design (UI). In the second half of the session, you’ll have a chance to practice designing for the web by making style tiles and wireframe layouts.
SESSION 4
In this session we’ll add animations and interactivity to our web pages with Javascript. You’ll learn about variables, functions and control statements, and use them to write simple Javascript programs. We’ll also take a look at the popular jQuery library. At the end of the day you’ll be building an image slider and a slide out menu.
SESSION 5
In our final session we will cover the use of professional development frameworks. You'll learn how to rapidly prototype a website with Bootstrap and about the role of CSS pre-compilers and Javascript libraries. Depending on class demand, we'll also look at more sophisticated HTML elements including audio, video and forms. Finally, you'll learn how to test your website in a range of browsers and devices so you can be confident sharing it with the world. By now, you'll be able to combine your new skills to create a multi-page website with a navigation menu, image slider and more.
