What: Design Your Mobile App

This workshop takes you from the beginning of mobile app designing and gets you to the finishing stage. You’ll learn how to conceptualise an app idea that has value and turn it into a functional prototype tested with users. Find out who your target user is and how the app can help them. Learn how to make an app specifically for touch screens using the visual style of Android and iOS. To make your app fun we’ll spice up the interface with animations, transitions and micro interactions to give each element those little details that make all the difference. Once the interface design is finished, we will leave everything ready for the developers.

SESSION OVERVIEW:

Session 1 - Jan 30

On the first day we will learn how to think of an app idea that has value, and move it to a functional prototype tested with users, and check its usability. This means conceptualising an app that has value to users. After that it’s a matter of defining who the user is and what tools we can provide, through the app, to solve his or her problem. This involves learning User- Centred Design. Next is designing wireframes as a way to translate the concept of the app to a tangible level. This allows us to communicate it to others and do user testing.

Session 2 - Jan 31

On the second day of the workshop we will learn how to design the app for touch screens. This involves learning specific characteristics of interface design: interaction zones, minimum target sizes and design for different screen sizes. When thinking of design style we will focus on interpreting the visual style of Android and iOS. The idea is to design an interface that matches those operating systems’ style, while standing out from the rest. To make your app fun we will spice up the interface with animations, transitions and micro interactions. Once the interface design is finished, we will leave everything ready for the developers. There will be a final discussion on screen densities.

INSTRUCTOR: Javier Simon Cuello

Javier is a UX designer specialising in mobile technology, he currently resides in Barcelona. He has worked on various projects for both small and large companies such as Telefonica, Zara, Yahoo! and FC Barcelona.

Javier put all his experience into Designing Mobile Apps, a book that over time, which over time has become a must for those who want to start in the world of designing apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
