Woodworking, printing and music; they’re all beautiful pieces of art, so why not bring them together? That’s what 3 artists thought when they decided to join forces, skills and qualities in a Cajón course.

In the two-days course you’re going to build your own Cajón box drum. This box-shaped hand percussion instrument has its origins in 18th century Peru. During this interactive course you’ll learn how to create the Cajón drum out of wood, decorate it with a print and learn to play this handmade craft.

So from now on when a hot summer day is coming, you can bring your very own Cajón with you and play with friends anywhere you want!

SESSION OVERVIEW

Session 1 JUN 3 6-9pm
We will kick off the course with a quick history and usage recap of the Cajon and getting to know different types and music aspects of it. Right after that you’ll get your hands dirty! You’ll be making it’s shelve out of wood. You’ll receive all materials already precut by our master and the bits you need to assemble into the Cajón. In order to make it perfect and sound just right, you’ll need to work on the pieces by using different tools such as sanders and drills. Once your pieces are ready, you will take the leap into assembling it all together, making sure everything is aligned.

Session 2 JUN 11am-5pm
The second session we’ll devote to finishing the structure and assembling the Cajón together. Making sure the sounds are clean and accurate. Once you’re done with the wood part, you can start customize your Cajón. To decorate him we’ll be using screen printing techniques. During this process you will learn the basics of wood screen printing, how to work with colors and binder and printing the design! To finish the course in a musical mood you will give your Cajón a try.A professional percussionist will teach you the tricks of this beautiful instrument and show you the amazing range of sounds and rhythms it can create. It will be an awesome experience which you can continue back home.

INSTRUCTORS: Lluis Mateu, Sarah Kennedy & Diego Ain

We will start the course with wood lover Lluis Mateu who has experience in woodworking for more then 25 years. During the course he will teach you all the skills to create a prefect shaped Cajón drum box.

Sarah Kennedy, with her admirable and inspiring portfolio, will teach you afterwards all the techniques she'd gained from 10 year Screen Printing experience to pimp up the Cajón box however you like.

Finally, it's Storyteller Diego Ain's turn who uses audiovisual and technology as expressions tools. With his musical background, he will teach you all the basic Latino drum grooves and get you warmed up before summer is coming.

CUSTOMIZATION:
There are some limitations to design, if you wish to make your own unique artwork you will need to send us your blueprints in advance, in order to illuminate the screens in time. This will cost 10 euro extra.
