Musikfestivals mit Ausrichtung auf Solo-Improvisation gibt es – auch international – bisher sehr wenige. Kurator Volker Meitz ist es gelungen, für diese spezielle und intime Form der musikalischen Darbietung ein alljährlich stattfindendes Forum zu etablieren. Vom 21. bis 23. August 2020 findet bereits zum dritten Mal das Berlin Solo Impro Festival im Acker Stadt Palast in Berlin statt.
An den drei Tagen sind 12 Berliner Künstler*innen zu erleben, die in ganz unterschiedlichen musikalischen Universen zu Hause sind. In einer Stadt, die als eine von Europas Zentren nicht nur für experimentelle Musikformen gilt, kann Volker Meitz hier aus dem Vollen schöpfen. Dabei hat er den stilistischen Rahmen bewusst weit gesteckt: von Echtzeitmusik, Neuer Musik, Freejazz und Elektronik spannt sich der Überschneidungsbereich der eingeladenen Musiker*innen, deren Instrumente von Cello und Kontrabassquerflöte über speziell präpariertem Vibraphon oder Modularsynthesizer bis zur bloßen Gesangsstimme reichen; zwischen experimentellem Noise und melodiöser Harmonik ist hier alles möglich, integriert durch die Klammer der Solo-Improvisation als Kernkonzept des Festivals.
Das Line-up verspricht nicht zuletzt dadurch Spannung, dass sowohl „alte Hasen“ der SoloImprovisation auch Musiker*innen dabei sind, die erstmalig eine komplette Solo-Darbietung präsentieren (siehe Line-up).
Zu Beginn eines jeden Abends steht ein einführendes Podiumsgespräch mit den vier Musiker*innen, wonach diese nacheinander Solo-Performances von jeweils 20 bis 25 Minuten geben. Den kontrastreichen Abschluss jedes Abends bildet ein gemeinsames Finale, bei dem Gegensätze und Gemeinsamkeiten von Solo- und Ensemblespiel offenbar werden.
