In den Jahren ab 1815 war der große Komponist Ludwig van
Beethoven mit mehreren Problemen konfrontiert: körperlich, emotional,
finanziell. Seine Taubheit ist fast vollständig, er verlässt sich bei
der Kommunikation auf „Gesprächsbücher“. Er zieht sich in tiefe
„Fugen“-Zustände zurück, die oft mit Schizophrenie in Verbindung
gebracht werden, und bekommt seltsame Visionen, sowohl himmlischer als
auch schrecklicher Natur. In ihrer Klarheit ähneln sie nicht den
Halluzinationen, sondern den Besuchen aus einer parallelen Realität,
Szenen aus einer bevorstehenden Zukunft. Beethoven hat Enthüllungen von
wunderbaren Erfindungen, glänzende Schiffe in der Luft, ungehörte Musik,
Blutbad jenseits des Glaubens. Aus diesen Zuständen heraus komponiert
er, übersetzt diese Szenen in Musik, die die Regeln dehnt, bis sie am
Rande der Zerstörung stehen.
„Die größte Fuge“ ist ein 70-minütiges Monodrama mit dem spektakulären Bassbariton Nicholas Isherwood, einem Streichquartett sowie vorgefertigter und live eingespielter Elektronik.
„Die größte Fuge“ ist eine Auftragskomposition der In Situ Art Society. Gefördert durch die Beethoven Jubiläums GmbH und die Kunststiftung NRW.
Seit über 35 Jahren ist der Multiinstrumentalist, Komponist und
Performer Elliott Sharp eine Schlüsselfigur der New Yorker Avantgarde
und experimentellen Musikszene. Er hat zahlreiche CDs – von Blues, Jazz
über orchestrale Musik bis zu Noise, Wave, Rock und Techno –
eingespielt. Sharp leitete über die Jahre viele Ensembles, wie das
bluesorientierte Terraplane oder Orchestra Carbon, sowie Tectonics und
SysOrk und improvisierte mit John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Christian
Marclay, Marc Ribot, Joey Baron und vielen anderen. Er schrieb Musik für
das Ensemble Modern, das Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt und das
JACK Quartet.
Elliott Sharp nahm an zahlreichen Festivals teil, wie New Music Stockholm, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Tomorrow Festival in Shenzhen, Au Printemps und vielen anderen. Im Jahr 2010 schieb er die Science-fiction-Oper About Us! für Jügendliche an der Bayerischen Staatsoper, und im Herbst 2014 fand die Premiere seiner Oper Port Bou über den Tod von Walter Benjamin im Issue Project Room, New York statt.
Im Oktober 2014 eröffnete Elliott Sharp das 50. Jazzfest Berlin mit der Auftragskomposition Tribute: MLK Berlin ’64, gewidmet dem Vorwort, das Martin Luter King vor 50 Jahre für das Programmheft der ersten Berliner Jazztage geschrieben hat. Die CD „4am Always“ von Elliott Sharps Terraplane wurde mit dem Jahrespreis 2014 der deutschen Schallplattenkritik ausgezeichnet. Das Album In 27 Pieces der Violinistin Hilary Hahn, das 2015 den Grammy-Preis bekommen hat, beinhaltet Sharps Komposition „Storm of the Eye“.
Elliott Sharp hat 2014 das Guggenheim Fellowship sowie den Berlin Prize 2015 der American Academy in Berlin gewonnen.
