"Ingrain" is an illustration of what happens when dogmatic systems of repression encounter the demand for hypersexualized performance in contemporary popular culture. In both contexts, sexuality and guilt are codependent.
There exists little difference between submission and rebellion. In the attempt to reject certain indoctrinated principles, we just find new sources of self-destruction. The comfort with feeling contaminated just asserts itself over and over again into new activities and the same fears find new circumstances to project themselves.
Under this value system, there become only two options: suppression or merchandising.
The desire for something authentic or expressive is interrupted by the failure to do so through compassion or pleasure and so redirects to a more familiar feeling: shame.
Duration of piece: about 45 minutes
