Die britische Musikerin und Komponistin Lindsay Cooper (1951–2013) brachte das Fagott und die Kompositionstechniken der Neuen Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts in die Welt des experimentellen Rocks der 70er Jahre. Sie war eine musikalische Polyglottin, ebenso fließend in Klassik, Rock, Jazz und freier Improvisation, und Autorin vieler Film- und Theater-Soundtracks. Sie war Mitglied der Gruppen Comus, Henry Cow, National Health, David Thomas and The Pedestrians und des Mike Westbrook Orchestra. Sie war Mitbegründerin von News from Babel und der Feminist Improvising Group und leitete ihre eigenen Projekte Music for Films und Oh Moscow. Sie war jahrelang an Multipler Sklerose erkrankt, die sie schließlich zwang, sich in den 1990er Jahren von ihren Auftritten zurückzuziehen.
Kurz nach Lindsay Coopers Tod hat die in London lebende japanische Musikerin Yumi Hara das Ensemble Half the Sky gegründet mit dem Ziel, die Musik von Lindsay Cooper in Japan und Europa live zu präsentieren (da viele Werke von Cooper nie im Konzert aufgeführt wurden). Ursprünglich bestand das Ensemble aus zwei Musikern, die mit Lindsay Cooper eng verbunden waren (die Sängerin Dagmar Krause und der Schlagzeuger Chris Cutler) und mehreren jüngeren japanischen Musikern. Diese Formation hat zahlreiche Konzerte in Japan, sowie in dem renommierten Cafe OTO in London, auf dem Avantgarde Festival in Schiphorst und auf dem Rock in Opposition Festival in Frankreich gespielt.
Für die Konzerte in Bonn und in Münster ist eine neue Besetzung geplant: zusätzlich zu Dagmar Krause und Chris Cutler wird noch ein Musiker aus dem Kultband Henry Cow auftreten, nämlich der Multiinstrumentalist Tim Hodgkinson. Dazu kommen die Pianistin Yumi Hara, die britische Fagottistin Chlöe Herington und der japanische Bassist Mitsuru Nasuno.
