Mitten
im Winter in Bethlehem. Ox kommt von der Arbeit nach Hause in seinen
Stall - und da liegt doch tatsächlich ein kleines lebendiges Etwas in
seiner Krippe.
Ein Kind mitten auf seinem Abendessen -
das ist ja wohl die Höhe! Esel muss her, aber der ist nie da, wenn man
ihn braucht ... Und als er endlich kommt, wissen alle beide nicht, was
tun und vor allem: wohin mit dem kleinen «Matthias». Denn draußen ist es
bitterkalt.
Schon
bald stellen Ox und Esel fest, dass der kleine Schreihals von drei
komischen Männern, aber auch von Soldaten gesucht wird. Ein Soldat wird
in die Flucht geschlagen und die beiden liebenswerten Tiere übernehmen
die Elternschaft, bis die wahren Eltern, Josef und Mechthild - oder so -
vom Einkaufen zurück sind ...
