Description

John Cage: ‘Theatre Piece’ (1960)Künstlerische Leitung: Anna Clementi

English

Theatre Piece was composed in 1960 and premiered in New York on March 7 1960.
The piece consists in 8 parts and can be performed by 1-8 performers(dancers, musicians, singers, actors etc.) The parts are to be used in whole or in part, in any combination.

This work was originally used as music for the choreographed piece by Merce Cunningham of the same title. Theatre Piece is a composition indeterminate of its performance. It is one of Cage’s earliest works to use time brackets. These time brackets indicate a period of time within which an action may be made. The actions are taken from a gamut 20 nouns and/or verbs, chosen by the performer.
